IL Skills Training and Social/ Support Group
Central Utah Center for Independent Living (CUCIL) offers a variety of ways for people with disabilities to come together and develop their skills, as well as meet and connect with others in order to form strong friendships and a network of support for themselves and their families.
The first way we do this is by offering Independent Living (IL) Skills Training classes.
Veronica Anaya teaches classes in various things such as:
- Cooking – Learn to prepare easy, fun, and delicious meals. We prepare a different dish at each class, while teaching the importance of safety and hygiene in the kitchen.
- Computers – Learn how to operate a computer and navigate various programs and utilities.
- Money Management – Learn how to create a household budget, keep a balanced checkbook, manage a savings account and more.
- Household Management – Make a shopping list and go grocery shopping. Learn the importance of keeping an orderly home. Create a healthy meal plan.
- Community Integration – Participate in various activities that happen in our community. Take a trip to a museum, a movie, or a sporting event.
These are just a some of the classes offered here at CUCIL. We offer classes in
communication, social skills, job skills and utilizing public support. Classes can be customized upon request.
We currently have three Social/ Support Groups to aid our consumers in getting out, meeting and socializing with other people with disabilities and offering support to each other.
- Youth Leadership Group – Youth, ages 16-24, meet to socialize and explore solutions to the barriers they face as young people with disabilities.
- Arts and Culture Group – Cristina Pitts and Becky Halliday coordinate this group. The workshop meets once a month to further the artistic expression of people with both hidden and visible disabilities. This is a great group to socialize with others and become lifelong friends.
- ABI Support Group – Sunny Todhunter leads this social group to help build awareness and acceptance for people who have survived brain injury. Come and meet with others to build a network of support and to know you are not alone.
