What is assistive technology?

Assistive technology is any device that helps a person with a disability achieve a more independent life.

Assistive Technology

CUCIL works with individuals with disabilities to acquire the necessary assistive technology through their insurance. This is a consumer driven, independent living program. It is not intended to ease the task of care giving for the family/attendants of the individual. Funding can only be provided when there are no other sources available and only when available. Funding will not pay for any item that can be covered through health insurance.

Home Modification

Modifications can only be made to a consumer's home or a consumer's relative-owned home in which the consumer resides.  The only modifications that can be authorized involve those directly affecting the functional limitations of the individual with the disability. Anyone who resides in an apartment or other dwelling that is not owned by them or a family member, is not eligible for home modifications. However, these individuals may be eligible for adaptive equipment that does not attach to or alter the property.

Equipment Loan Bank

CUCIL has an Assistive Technology Loan Bank from which consumers may borrow on a temporary basis. The Loan Bank consists of donated used equipment, as well as new equipment that has been purchased by the Center. This equipment may be borrowed until permanent equipment has been obtained.
