Hyrum at age 5 Hyrum

He is able to live with his family because of the assistance from Central Utah Center for Independent Living

Hyrum was born almost thirteen years ago. At birth he was not breathing. The doctors took measures to save his life and Hyrum was in intensive care for four days…since then, this young boy, has seen various specialists and they have found that he has a multitude of disabilities, among them Cerebral Palsy, seizures, as well as vision and hearing loss. Despite his disabilities, Hyrum has maintained a wonderful, cheerful personality. He loves interacting with people. He cannot walk or talk, but he has found his own way of communicating. Hyrum has three older sisters who love and adore him. His mother is a single parent and taking care of Hyrum has been a challenge! She used to lift him in and out of his bed and in and out of his wheelchair. She carried him (and his chair) up and down the steep stairs to the house.

Central Utah Center for Independent Living helped Hyrum and his family obtains a porch lift, and a lift for their van. “The lifts have been such a blessing for our family,” says Hyrum’s mother… “It has relieved the strain on my back and made it safer for Hyrum. There is much less chance for accidents.” As Hyrum continues to grow, his needs will grow as well. “Without the help of the Central Utah Center for Independent Living, I don’t know if it would have been possible for us to keep him with us,” states his mother. Having Hyrum stay home, with his sisters & mother, has made a great difference in their lives as a family…now they can stay together!!!
